Empowering leaders are focused on providing the appropriate direction to individuals,  teams and organizations. This direction is supported by giving the individuals the clear parameters within which they can perform their work. Empowering an individual requires that a leader trust, respect and have confidence in the individual tasked with completing the work. Empowerment is a tool that successful organizations employ to serve their customers with the highest levels of service and satisfaction.

Leaders must clearly understand the work to be done and be able to give the individual direction that supports getting that work done in the most efficient way. Direction is a foundation to getting the right work done on time and within budget. The direction that is given to an individual when being empowered will make or break the performance and results. Leaders have accountability for ensuring the direction is clearly understood by the individual being tasked with the work.

Empowering individuals requires parameters in order for the work to be completed as directed. The parameters may include authority limits, spans of control, financial limits or resource allocation. The parameters ensure that the focus is within the scope of the work to be done and balancing the need to solve the challenge with being fiscally responsible. Empowerment without parameters is likely to end in failure.

Individuals who are empowered have a proven track record with their leader and have demonstrated their ability to get things done. When individuals are empowered they are more likely to take ownership seriously and work harder and smarter to complete the work assignment. As individuals complete tasks and work assignments, they can develop new skills and competencies on more and more challenging opportunities. Organizations are most successful when they commit to an employee empowerment model.

Empowerment can impact the company’s performance and results. When empowered individuals are able to get work done with fewer steps and hand offs to others, the processes are cost effective. The flow of work in an empowered team or organization is streamlined and moves forward with ease. There are fewer roadblocks to getting the work done when individuals are empowered to make decisions that support the organization and the customer.

Customers who support organizations with an empowerment model are more likely to experience a higher level of satisfaction. When a customer calls into a service center with an inquiry to a problem, they want it solved without being transferred to another representative. Organizations which are focused on the customer experience will recognize clearly the value in empowering individuals to deliver on the first opportunity of a problem being presented. Creating frustration for the customer is usually associated with a clear solution or decision not being within the individual’s empowerment level.

Empowerment creates a winning solution for leaders in that it will develop others on the team and in the organization. It will serve to satisfy the customers, also. Organizations with a high satisfaction level with their customers and an outstanding reputation have taken the necessary steps to outline and implement an empowerment program that impacts their results. Developing a strong culture of empowerment will attract and retain talented individual. Empowerment yields successful results!!!
